Understanding and Responding to Mass Incarceration (URMI) 2021 Series, Session 3: Undoing Violence to Dismantle Mass Incarceration
Mass incarceration depends on asserting white supremacy through over-policing and over-prosecution of nonviolent offenses. This system also creates an endless loop of incarceration, release without supports, re-arrest, re-incarceration, and long sentences for so-called “violent offenders” while failing to address the sources of violence. These include mental health issues arising from historical trauma, adverse childhood events, and the daily effects of racial and economic oppression.

This session will address mass incarceration and mental health through the lens of violence, the ineffectiveness and inhumanity of punishment, and what effective responses look like.

Speakers to include:
• Sasha Cotton - Director of the Office of Violence Prevention with the City of Minneapolis – Health Department.

• Ja'far Braylock - Born and raised in South Minneapolis, Braylock was recently released from prison after serving a 30 year sentence. He is a "Neterian-Philosopher" and researcher of cutting-edge sciences such as quantum mechanics, cosmology, and consciousness research. He studies history and spirituality and is a practitioner of sacred-science and spiritual-psychology. Braylock believes mis-education is equivalent to the destruction and deterioration of the human mind.

• Antonio Williams - Soon after his 20th birthday, Williams was incarcerated for 14 years. During his time in prison he educated fellow prisoners about policies and grievance procedures and exposed the corruption and contradictions within the system. Williams continues to organize within his community: helping gather signatures to amend the Minneapolis City Charter and creating a nonprofit that assists formerly incarcerated people with resources and positive examples.
